ACL injuries are classified three ways:

  • Grade 1: minor damage to the ACL, which is mildly stretched, but the knee joint is not at risk
  • Grade 2: a stretched or partially torn ACL (rare)
  • Grade 3: a complete tear where the ACL can no longer stabilize the knee joint
