Dr. Richard Johnson

PT, DPT, MS, ATC

Richard Johnson’s passion for physical therapy is deeply rooted in his extensive athletic background and personal experiences with sports injuries. A former Division I football player at Howard University, Richard went on to compete professionally with the Washington Commanders, the Alliance of American Football (AAF), and the XFL. From youth football to the professional level, sports medicine played a critical role in his performance and recovery. These experiences not only shaped his appreciation for the field but also inspired him to pursue a career dedicated to helping athletes recover, prevent injury, and perform at their highest level.

Richard brings a unique combination of clinical expertise and firsthand athletic experience to his work as a physical therapist. He earned two Bachelor of Science degrees from Howard University—one in Sports Medicine (2017) and one in Sports Management (2018). He went on to complete a Master of Science in Athletic Training at George Mason University in 2021, followed by a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Howard University in 2023.

Throughout his professional journey, Richard has gained hands-on experience at some of the highest levels of sports performance and rehabilitation. His clinical training includes a Sports Medicine Fellowship with the Minnesota Vikings (2024–2025), a sports medicine rotation with the Washington Mystics during the 2023 season, and a summer athletic training internship with the Arizona Cardinals in 2020. He has also provided per diem athletic training services at the Division I level with Howard University Athletics and completed clinical rotations in both inpatient and outpatient settings, as well as across high schools in Northern Virginia.

Richard has a strong clinical interest in treating knee and ankle injuries, both acute and chronic, as well as low back conditions—particularly in athletes from high-demand sports such as football, basketball, and track and field. His background as a high-level athlete enables him to connect with patients on a personal level, understanding both the physical challenges and psychological demands of injury recovery. He emphasizes tailored, sport-specific treatment strategies that address the unique needs of each individual.

Richard Johnson combines deep clinical training, athletic insight, and a passion for sports performance to deliver high-quality care. His mission is to help athletes return to competition not only recovered, but better prepared to perform and thrive.
